CUSTOMER ADVISORY
ADVISORY: A hard drive firmware upgrade has been released to correct a rare occurrence of drive failures on power up of certain Seagate SATA drives on the HP StorageWorks MSA2000 systems
NOTICE: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the Release Date. This document is subject to change without notice.
DESCRIPTION
Any HP StorageWorks MSA2000 system configured with any of the Seagate SATA hard drives listed in the Scope section might contain drives affected by this issue. This issue is extremely rare and requires the following conditions to occur:
-
The drive would be listed by supplier serial number as an affected drive (see lookup information below).
-
The drive is on SN05 or earlier firmware.
-
The array is power cycled while the drives are in a certain low-probability state.
To minimize the chance of this issue occurring, HP StorageWorks MSA2000 disk arrays should not be unnecessarily power cycled.
Due to the rare nature of this issue and the HP StorageWorks MSA2000 usage of RAID technology, customer data should be protected by any single drive failures on power on. Any drives failing during power on due to this issue can be replaced following the normal HP Support or warranty process.
NOTE: Proactive hard drive replacement is neither necessary nor authorized.

RESOLUTION
The power on failure issue has been corrected in firmware SN06 for the drives listed above.
HP requires that the drive's supplier serial number is checked prior to any firmware update. Seagate has provided a supplier serial number lookup tool to verify if drives are affected by this issue:
http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931
.
To list the disk drive supplier serial numbers and drive models on the HP StorageWorks MSA2000, follow these instructions using either the Storage Management Utility (SMU) interface or the Command Line Interface (CLI).
Storage Management Utility
-
Log in to the array via the HP StorageWorks MSA SMU as a
monitor user
.
-
Drive models and supplier drive serial numbers are listed under
advanced settings > disk drive list
, as shown below:
Command Line Interface
-
Telnet into the array and log in to the HP StorageWorks MSA2000 as
monitor user
.
-
Run the
show disk encl
command to list drive model and drive supplier serial number.
NOTE: HP recommends that only disk drives shown by serial number to be affected should be updated to SN06 firmware. Only disk drive firmware downloaded directly from hp.com is supported.
To upgrade the hard drives on an HP StorageWorks MSA2000, follow the instructions provided in the
HP StorageWorks 2000 Family Modular Storage Array reference guide 481599-003
