Beginning in March 2007, Daylight Saving Time (DST) start and end dates for the United States will transition to comply with the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Under the new law, Daylight Saving Time will begin on the second Sunday of March and end the first Sunday of November, extending the timeframe by four weeks. Previously, Daylight Saving Time began the first Sunday of April and ended on the last Sunday in October. In addition, Canada and Bermuda have made equivalent changes to their Daylight Saving Time rules in an effort to be consistent with U.S. time changes.
Most operating systems that run on ProLiant servers automatically update the system clock at the appropriate time for systems in time zones that observe Daylight Saving Time. However, due to the changes in when Daylight Saving Time takes effect, the system clock will be off by one hour if the operating system is not updated to account for the changes that take place in March of 2007. Operating system and application software vendors are providing updates to correct this situation. HP recommends that customers assess their environment and install the necessary updates on ProLiant servers to adjust for the Daylight Saving Time changes.
For comprehensive information on the Daylight Saving Time changes and HP products and services that may be affected by the Daylight Saving Time changes, visit the HP DST website located at the following URL:
http://h10072.www1.hp.com/dst/
Several countries other than United States of America are also implementing the same DST change (Canada, Bermuda), and other countries are expected to make similar changes. For a complete listing of Worldwide Daylight Saving Time schedules, including countries that are changing along with the United States, refer to the Worldwide Daylight Saving reference page, available at the following URL:
http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/g.html
This Notice answers the following questions and provides detailed information:
- Are ProLiant servers affected by the DST changes?
- What is HP doing to ensure that ProLiant servers are updated appropriately?
- HP-specific and HP-supported software that is not affected and no customer action is needed.
- Software that only needs an operating system update to bring the system clock up to date with the DST changes.
- Software that requires updates in addition to or in place of an operating system update.
- A table containing all HP-supported operating systems with links to the necessary operating system patches, erratas, or other applicable downloads.
DETAILS
Businesses and individuals whose environments are sensitive to date and time transactions and utilize a local time zone may be impacted by changes in the Daylight Saving Time rules. In addition, some applications perform date and time manipulation and may make automatic decisions based on Daylight Saving Time rules. Although this situation should be rare and HP has not identified any particular applications run on x86 servers that make decisions based on Daylight Saving Time, ProLiant customers should be aware of this possibility and take corrective action if they believe they may be affected.
HP recommends customers perform a system assessment to understand what updates may still need to be installed by March 11 to allow for the automated adjustments for the Daylight Saving Time changes to occur.
ARE PROLIANT SERVERS AFFECTED BY THE NEW DST CHANGE?
You are affected by the DST change if:
-
You are running a computer system in the USA, Canada, or Bermuda, particularly if the system is running an application that performs time-sensitive functions, such as scheduling or creation/validation of time or date stamps.
- You are outside of the USA, Canada or Bermuda but are running a computer system that interacts with or is integrated with systems in the USA, Canada or Bermuda that have transitioned to the DST rules.
This is not unique to HP products. All devices that automatically adjust Daylight Saving Time and that support operating systems or software that rely on a local time zone that observes DST will be affected by the 2007 DST change.
WHAT IS HP DOING TO HELP ME UPDATE MY PROLIANT SERVERS?
HP's number one priority is always the satisfaction of its customers. HP is committed to working with its customers to address any potential issues created by the DST change in their HP supported products.
