HP Notebook PCs - Removing the HP Bluetooth Software and Installing the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack

DESCRIPTION
The following process can be used to remove the HP Bluetooth support software and install the Microsoft Bluetooth stack that is native to Windows XP SP2. To avoid instability, only one Blue Tooth stack should be loaded at a time, therefore the instructions included must be adhered to. By default the HP Bluetooth support software is pre-installed.
The Bluetooth stack is a protocol stack as referenced from a driver or application to interact with the actual device.
SCOPE
The specific notebook PCs affected by this issue are listed in the Hardware Platforms Affected section at the bottom of this advisory.
RESOLUTION Remove the HP Bluetooth software and install Microsoft Bluetooth stack
Remove the HP Bluetooth software and install Microsoft Bluetooth stack
To remove the HP Bluetooth software and install the Microsoft Bluetooth stack, perform the following steps:
Remove the HP software
-
Click
Start
,
Control Panel
and then double click the
Add/Remove Programs
icon.
-
Select the
HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology
and click the
Remove
button. Follow the on screen instructions. Close the
Add or Remove
screen.
-
Click
Start
,
All Programs
,
Accessories
and then click
Windows Explorer
.
-
Click the
+
sign next to the
C: drive
to expand the contents of C:
-
Click the
+
sign next to the swsetup folder.
-
Select the folder labeled
btooth
and press the
Delete
key.
-
Click the
Yes
button to confirm the deletion of this folder.
Manually edit the bth.inf file
-
In Windows Explorer, click the
+
sign next to the
C:/Windows folder
. Locate and click on the
inf
folder.
-
Locate and double click the
bth.inf
file. The file should open using Notepad or similar application.
-
Under the
Device section - Start
section, locate
[Microsoft.NT.5.1]
Microsoft Wireless Transceiver for Bluetooth=...........................
Microsoft Wireless Transceiver for Bluetooth 2.0= ....................

Copy and paste the following two lines below the lines above;

HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology= BthUsb, USB\Vid_03F0&Pid_011D

HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology= BthUsb, USB\Vid_03F0&Pid_171D
the result should be:

Save the bth.ini file.

In Notepad, click
File
and then click
Save
on the File Menu. Close Notepad.
Allow Windows to install the Microsoft Bluetooth stack
-
Press the wireless activation button to restore power to the module. The "Found New Hardware" wizard should display questioning if Windows Update should find the driver. Select
Yes
this time only.

At the next prompt, select
Install the software automatically
.

Windows will display a dialog stating "Found HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology. The Bluetooth icon should be a darker shade of blue than the previous icon.
-
Windows will prompt to install drivers for the Microsoft Bus Enumerator. Allow this process to take place.

Upon completion of the driver installation, the Microsoft stack can be verified in the Device Manager.

Click
Start
,
Control Panel
and then double click the
System
icon.
-
Click the
Hardware
tab and then click the
Device Manager
button.
-
The Bluetooth icon should not have a caution symbol next to it.
Remove the Microsoft Bluetooth stack and installing the HP Bluetooth support software
Use the following instructions to reverse the procedure above and reinstall the HP Bluetooth support software on the notebook.
Remove the Microsoft Bluetooth stack
Perform the following steps to uninstall the Microsoft stack in Windows:

Click
Start
,
Control Panel
and then double click the
System
icon.

Click the
Hardware
tab. Then click the
Device Manager
button.

Click the
+
sign next to the Bluetooth icon to expand the device.
-
Right click on the
Microsoft Enumerator
and select
uninstall
. Follow the onscreen instructions.
-
Right click on the
HP integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology
and select
uninstall
. Follow the onscreen instructions.
-
Immediately turn off the power to the Bluetooth wireless device upon completion of uninstalling the HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology.
Manually edit the bth.inf file

Click
Start
,
All Programs
,
Accessories
and then click
Windows Explorer
.

In Windows Explorer, click the
+
sign next to the
C:/Windows folder
. Locate and click on the
inf folder
.

Locate and double click the
bth.inf
file. The file should open using Notepad or similar application.

Under the
Device section - Start
section, locate
[Microsoft.NT.5.1]

Delete or comment out the following lines;

In Notepad, click
File
and then
Save
. Close Notepad.
Reinstall the HP Bluetooth support software
Reinstall the softpaq containing the Software Support for HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology. Download the appropriate softpaq for your notebook from
www.hp.com
