HP Business Inkjet 1200 Printer Series - Frequently Asked Questions About Networking

Introduction
The printer supports wired and wireless networking options. This document attempts to answer some of the commonly asked questions on the networking design of the printer.
Frequently asked questions
  1. Does the printer support Novell?
Novell is supported with the following external JetDirect boxes:
    • Wired: en3700 (USB)
    • Wired: 500x (Parallel)
    • Wired: 300x (Parallel)
    • Wireless: 380x (USB)
The embedded networking solution of the HP Business Inkjet 1200dn/dtn/dtwn supports simple TCP/IP printing protocol only.
  2. Does the HP Business Inkjet 1200 dn/dtn/dtwn printer support LPD/LPR port protocol?
No, only HP Standard TCP/IP port protocol for Windows and port 9100 for Linux are supported. The external JetDirect boxes listed above are required for LPD/LPR support.
  3. Does the HP Business Inkjet 1200 dn/dtn/dtwn printer support FTP printing/Telnet configuration? What are the suggested workarounds?
No. The suggested workaround is to use the EWS (Embedded Web Server) to configure the printer setting. For printing, the solution is to use HP Standard TCP/IP protocol for Windows and port 9100 using CUPS for Linux (http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net).
  4. Does the HP Business Inkjet dtwn support wired and wireless connections simultaneously?
No. The printer will operate on only one active network connection (either wired or wireless) at any time.
  5. What is the latest firmware version?
The latest released firmware version is MMR2021K. The latest firmware for the printer can be downloaded from the internet. Click here to go the technical support Web page for the HP Business Inkjet 1200 Printer series at http://www.hp.com/support/businessinkjet1200 . From this web page click on the "Download Drivers and Software" link from the left Nav Bar. Select your Product then your Operating System. The firmware can be downloaded from the driver download pages for any of the Operating Systems except Windows Vista.
  6. What other documents are available (besides the User's Guide) that I can read to learn more in-depth information about the printer?
    Network related support documents
  7. At the DHCP server I made a (new) reservation for an IP-address pointing to the Hardware Address and assigned it Hostname ‘BIJ1200’. After re-booting the printer, it took-up the IP-Address, DHCP server IP, but not the Hostname. Why?
This is due to the limitation of the DHCP implementation of the printer networking solution in the earlier firmware (firmware version before MMR2021K). In the earlier firmware implementation, the printer sends out DHCP discover packets over the network without including option 12 (i.e.: Hostname option). This limitation is overcome in the latest firmware, MMR2021K, by including option 12 into the DHCP discover packets.
NOTE: Please refer to FAQ 5 of this document for the latest firmware download. Click here to go to FAQ 5 .
  8. Does the embedded network solution of the printer support PSA (Print Server Appliance)?
No. In order to support PSA, the networking solution needs to support LPD protocol which is not supported in the printer.
  9. Why does my printer keep going to AutoIP when I want it connected to DHCP?
Ensure that the printer and the DHCP server are on the same subnet mask and the printer can reach/recognize the DHCP server. Configure the IP address manually using the cross-cable (via EWS or installer). Follow the instructions given in FAQ 10 of this document.
  10. How do I configure my printer to a manual IP address ?
Connect the printer using the cross-cable. Temporarily connect the cross-cable (provided with the HP Business Inkjet dtwn only) from your printer to your computer. Run the installer to find the printer and change the setting to manually configure the IP address of the printer. Alternatively, go to the EWS and change the network setting for Manual IP address. Disconnect the cross-cable when prompted during the software installation OR when the configuration has been completed in the EWS.
Connect using the LAN by following the instructions below:
    1. Print the configuration page from the printer. In your computer, temporarily change the following setting on the Local Area Network Properties / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties.
    2. Change your computer IP address to 169.254.x.x, (identical to Default Gateway value) this IP address has to be unique in the network (not identical to the printer IP address).
    3. Change your computer subnet mask to 255.255.0.0. The subnet mask value on your computer must be the same as the subnet mask information on the printer configuration page.
    4. Restart the computer if required
NOTE: Windows 2000 requires a restart for the changes to take affect..
    5. Run the installer to ‘find’ the printer and change the setting to manually configure the IP address of the printer. Alternatively, go to the EWS and change the network setting for the Manual IP address.
  11. How do I reset the network settings of the printer?
    Follow the instructions below:
    1. Press the Configuration Page button once.
    2. Press the Resume button three times.
    3. Wait for about 20 seconds and then press the Power button to turn off the printer.
    4. Disconnect the power cord from the printer.
    5. Wait for about 20 seconds and then reconnect the power cord.
    6. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
