Updating the System BIOS for Notebook PCs with Linux Installed

HP provides Linux software downloads as a courtesy to our customers. Please read the HP Linux Support Policy before downloading the updates. The following BIOS updates are provided for Linux users.
HP also has a fully supported notebook PC that comes preinstalled with SUSE Linux, the HP Compaq nx5000 .
Update your Linux notebook
The following downloads create a bootable diskette or CD to upgrade the system BIOS for the listed notebook models. Click on a link listed below to download the update.

Use the following steps to download and install the update:
  1. Download the update (spxxxx.tar) to a directory on your hard drive.
  2. Open shell and run the following command to open the package: tar xf spxxxx.tar .
  3. Use the following command to execute the package: sh spxxxx.sh .
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a bootable diskette or CD.
  5. After creating a bootable diskette or CD, the update that you downloaded in Step 1 can be deleted.
  6. Power off the notebook then connect the AC adapter.
  7. Insert the bootable diskette in the floppy drive, or insert the bootable CD in the CD-ROM drive, then restart the notebook.
    CAUTION: Do not turn off power to the notebook while updating the system BIOS.
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the BIOS update.
