HP LaserJet postscript Printing Solution

PostScript, developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated, is a page description language used extensively in desktop publishing. HP now offers customers its own Postscript compatible printing solution: PostScript Level 2 & 3 Emulation. As a result, HP can provide full Postscript Level 2 & 3 compatibility, added flexibility, and PostScript capabilities at no additional charge.

Full PostScript Level 2 & 3 compatibility

PostScript Level 2 & 3 Emulation maintains compatibility with Adobe PostScript Level 2 & 3. During the development process, HP's highest priority was compatibility. HP rigorously tested the new solution, and since the emulation is a implementation of Postscript Level 2 & 3, customers will see no change in print quality.

To substantiate its compatibility claims, HP allowed key customers to test the PostScript Level 2 Emulation. The LJ5 PostScript Beta SIMM Program provided key customers with an installable SIMM board containing HP's new solution. This board, installed in the HP LaserJet 5 Printer, enabled printers to demonstrate how HP's new solution performed.

Added flexibility

HP engineered the new code with the flexibility to take advantage of a new common graphics engine. Previously, each personality required a special code to transmit operation data telling the printer engine how to print each page. HP has developed a new architecture that allows all the personalities to use the same code. Thus, any additional personality has access to the same set of features. In addition, third party manufacturers can develop additional features without having to design complex graphics engine code.

In addition to the flexibility in the graphics engine design, HP developed its PostScript Level 2 & 3 Emulation with the flexibility to support specialized applications not supported by Adobe PostScript Level 2 & 3. Because HP owns the code for its emulation, the code can be customized to support specialized applications.

PostScript Level 2 & 3 Emulation provides customers full PostScript Level 2 & 3 compatibility, added flexibility, and PostScript capabilities at no additional charge. In addition, because HP's support staff is familiar with both the emulation code and the printer, they can more efficiently assist customers.

PostScript capabilities at no additional charge

PostScript Level 2 & 3 Emulation and PCL 6 (Printer Control Language 6) can now be bundled together and installed in HP printers at no additional charge. The two features offer side by side increase network compatibility. In addition, the printers maintain backward and forward compatibility with Adobe PostScript Level 2 & 3.
