HP Scanjet - Uninstall/Reinstall the HP Precisionscan, Pro, LT, or LTX Software in Safe Mode


Propose
This document provides instructions for uninstalling the HP Precisionscan, Pro, LT, and LTX and reinstalling it in Windows Safe Mode.
Windows NT 4.0 does not have a Safe Mode; however, instructions are provided for uninstalling and reinstalling the HP Precisionscan, Pro, LT, and LTX software in Windows NT 4.0.
Symptoms
The following are some of the symptoms that you may see and that would require using this document:
  • ( The Precisionscan software or scanner does not function correctly
  • ( Error messages appear when using the Precisionscan software
  • ( Error messages appear when trying to reinstall the Precisionscan software
Before beginning

Step 1: Disconnect the scanner from the computer system
  1. Shut down the computer system.
  2. Disconnect the scanner power cable.
  3. Disconnect the interface cable (USB, parallel, or SCSI).
  4. Turn on the computer system.
Step 2: Uninstall the HP Precisionscan, Pro, LT, or LTX software
For Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 and Me
  1. Click Start , click Settings , and then click Control Panel . The Control Panel will open.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs . The Add/Remove Programs Properties window will appear.
  3. Click Precisionscan, Pro, LT, or LTX to highlight it, then click Add/Remove . The Confirm File Deletion window appears. Click Yes .
  4. Click Yes to All on the shared files warning screen.
For Windows 2000 Pro
  1. Click Start , click Settings , and then click Control Panel . The ControlPanel window will open.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs . The Add/Remove Programs Properties window will open.
  3. Click Precisionscan, Pro, LT, or LTX to highlight it, then click Change/Remove . The UninstallShield Wizardwindow will open.
  4. Click Yes to start the UninstallShield Wizard.
  5. Follow the instructions on the computer screen. Click Yes to All on the shared files warning screen.
For Windows XP
  1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel . The ControlPanel window will open.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs . The Add/RemoveProgramsProperties window will open.
  3. Click Precisionscan, Pro, LT, or LTX to highlight it, then click Change/Remove . The UninstallShield Wizard window will open.
  4. Click Yes to start the UninstallShield Wizard .
  5. Follow the screen prompts. Click Yes to All on the shared files warning screen.
Step 3: Delete all of the remaining files installed by the HP Precisionscan, Pro, LT, or LTX Software
  1. Open the file search window.
    • In Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0, click Start , click Find , and then click Files or Folders . The Find: All Files window will open.
    • In Windows Me, 2000 Pro and XP, click Start , click Search , and then click For Files or Folders . The Search Results window will open.
  2. In the Named box, type: SCANJET*
  3. In the Look in box, select (C:) . Make sure there is a check mark in the Include subfolders box.
  4. Click Find now or Search now to start the search.
    • Highlight and delete all files found.
    • Repeating Step 3, Items 2-4, find and delete the following files:
      • hpsc*
      • hpsj*
  5. Close the file search window to return to the Desktop.
  6. On the Desktop , double-click the Recycle Bin icon.
  7. Click File , and then click Empty Recycle Bin .
Step 4: Copy the installation files to the Desktop
  1. Insert the HP Scanjet Scanning software CD-ROM.
  2. Exit the automatic installation menu when it appears.
    • In Windows 95,98, NT 4.0, and 2000 Pro, double-click My Computer . The MyComputer window will open.
    • In Windows XP, click Start , and then click My Computer .
  3. Right-click the CD-ROM drive letter, then click Explore . The WindowsExplorer window will open.
  4. Right-click the English folder . Click Copy , and then close Windows Explorer. The Windows Explorer will close and the Desktop will reopen.
  5. Right-click the Desktop . A window will open. Click Paste . The Copying window will open and copy the English folder to the Desktop.
Step 5: Restart the computer in Safe Mode
For Windows 95
  1. Press the F8 key when Starting Windows 95 appears at the top of the screen.
  2. If the system is set up to boot to the floppy drive, then insert a disk and restart the computer.
  3. When the error “Non-system disk, please replace disk and strike any key�? displays, take the disk out and press the F8 key two times.
  4. Using the number pad on the keyboard, select Safe Mode and press ENTER. The computer system will restart in Safe Mode.
For Windows 98 or Me
  1. Click Start , and then click Run . The Run window will open.
  2. In the Open box, type: MSCONFIG
  3. Click OK .
  4. Click the Advanced button and select Enable Startup Menu .
  5. Using the keypad on the keyboard, select Safe Mode and press ENTER. The computer system will restart in Safe Mode.
    NOTE: Be sure to uncheck Enable Startup Menu after the installation has been successfully completed.
For Windows NT 4.0
There is no “Safe Mode�? in NT 4.0. To install the HP Precisionscan, Pro, LT, or LTX with nothing running in the background, follow these steps:
  1. Log on as an administrator with all administrative rights.
  2. Close all programs by pressing CTRL + ALT + DELETE at the same time.
  3. Click Task Manager , then End Task on all listed programs on the Applications tab.
For Windows 2000 Pro
  1. Click Start , click Shut Down , and then select Restart the Computer System .
  2. Press F8 while the Windows 2000 splash screen is up. The Windows2000Startup menu will open.
  3. Select Safe Mode and press ENTER. The computer system will restart in Safe Mode.
    NOTE: If you are having trouble getting the Windows 2000 Startup Menu to appear, insert a blank floppy disk into the A: drive before restarting. When a non-system disk error is received, remove the floppy disk and press F8 twice.
For Windows XP
  1. Click Start , and then click Run . The Run window will open.
  2. In the Open box, type: MSCONFIG
  3. Click OK . The System Configuration Utility window will open.
  4. Click the Boot.ini tab.
  5. In the Boot Options section, select /SAFEBOOT and Minimal .
    NOTE: Be sure to uncheck /SAFEBOOT after the installation has been successfully completed.
  6. Click OK . The System Configuration windows will open. Click Restart . The computer system will restart in Safe Mode.
Step 6: Install the HP Precisionscan software in Safe Mode
The computer system is now running in Safe Mode in Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000 Pro, and XP. Windows NT 4.0 is running with all other applications closed.
  1. Double-click SETUP.EXE . The file may be located in the English folder. Follow the instructions displayed on the computer screen to install the scanning software.

  2. After the HP Scanjet scanning software has completed installing, shut down and turn off the computer system.
  3. Reconnect the scanner to the computer system using the USB, parallel or SCSI interface cable, then plug in the scanner power cord.
  4. Reconnect the scanner power cable to the scanner and power outlet.
  5. Restart the computer system. The New Hardware window will open upon restarting the computer system and the necessary drivers will automatically install.
