MICR characters are the characters at the bottom of a check, sometimes referred to as the MICR line. These characters are used to process checks by a special machine that scans the MICR line. This process is based on a technology called Magnetic Ink Character Recognition or MICR. This technology uses magnetic reading to identify these unique numbers and characters.
In non-MICR print mode, TROY MICR printers use all the HP Laser Jet printer's features and functionality. When doing MICR printing, the printers produce high-quality MICR characters and signal levels for both E-13B and CMC-7 standard MICR fonts. TROY font and toner kits are available for the majority of the HP LaserJet printers, from the HP LaserJet II to the HP D640 High-Volume Printer.
The TROY modifications are a: MICR font DIMM/SIMM which the optical toner sensor plugs into; the optical sensor which detects the MICR print cartridge; and a voltage regulator board which plugs into the MICR DIMM/SIMM, the optical sensor, and the engine control board. Troy printers work the same as their HP counterparts except that when printing MICR a low toner message will stop printing.
