HP Deskjet 350 Series Printer - Setting Up the Printer
 Introduction
This document provides instructions for setting up your HP Deskjet 350 series printer. Novice to intermediate HP Deskjet owners should expect to take 15 to 20 minutes to set up the printer.
Setup the printer
The following steps can be used to setup the printer hardware.
Connect the printer end of the parallel cable firmly to the parallel port on the printer. Connect the computer end of the parallel cable to the parallel port on your computer and tighten the screws on the connector.

A parallel printer cable is not included in the box with the printer. |
Plug the connector for the power adapter firmly into the printer's power socket. Attach the power cord to the power adapter and plug the other end of the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.

Attach the portable sheet feeder to the back of the printer by inserting the two catches (hooks) near the bottom of the sheet feeder into the corresponding slots located on the back of the printer. Rotate the top edge of the sheet feeder toward the printer and press the two units together. There should be a click when the sheet feeder latches onto the back of the printer.

If needed, press the paper feeder's release button located at the top of the sheet feeder to allow the printer and sheet feeder to come together. |
Use the recess at the top center of the sheet feeder to pull the unit fully open.

Rotate each of the paper support arms until both are pointing upwards.

Push the paper release lever down to the open position and slide the paper-width guide to the side of the sheet feeder.

Load paper into the sheet feeder.

Move the paper-width adjustment guide against the paper and raise the paper release lever.

Press the power button to turn on the printer.

Press the Change Cartridge button to bring the cartridge cradle to the center of the printer.

Gently remove the tape covering the ink nozzles. Be careful not to touch the ink nozzles or the copper contacts.

Since the printer can only hold a single print cartridge (black or color) at a time, a storage container is provided to hold the other print cartridge. |
Insert the print cartridge into the carriage at an angle such that the blue or brown top is tilted toward you. The arrow on the print cartridge should be pointing toward the inside of the printer. Push the top of the cartridge inward, until the print cartridge snaps into place.

Press the change cartridge button to return the print cartridge to the right side of the printer.

Close the access door.

Install the printer software
The printer driver software must be properly installed for the printer to work with the computer. To ensure a successful driver installation, make sure that the following conditions have been met before installing the printer driver software:
Make sure that the printer is properly set up, turned on, and ready to print.
Check that all cables are firmly connected.
For Windows XP

You must have administrator privileges in Windows XP Professional to install a printer driver. |
Close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the steps below.
Right-click any program appearing on the Taskbar next to the Start button and choose Close
.
Repeat step a. until all the programs appearing on the Taskbar are closed.
Click Start
, Printers
and Faxes
, and then Add a Printer
.
Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the installation.
For Windows XP Home Version
Close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the steps below.
Right-click any program appearing on the Taskbar next to the Start button and choose Close
.
Repeat step a. until all the programs appearing on the Taskbar are closed.
Click Start
, Control Panel
, Printers
and Other Hardware
, Printers
and
Faxes
, and then Add a Printer
.
Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the installation.
For Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000

Close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the steps below.
Right-click any program appearing on the Taskbar next to the Start button and choose Close.
Repeat step a until all the programs appearing on the Taskbar are closed.
Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. The installation program should run automatically. If the installation program does not run automatically, click Start
and then click Run
. In the command line box, type the letter of the CD-ROM drive followed by :\SETUP.EXE (for example, type D:\SETUP.EXE).
Click Install Printer Driver
from the CD menu. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the printer software installation.
For Windows 95 and Windows 98

If the message "New Hardware Found" appears at any time during the installation of the printer software, select "Do not install a driver" and click OK
. If you see the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next
until you have a Finish option and then click Finish
. |
Close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the steps below.
Right-click any program appearing on the Taskbar next to the Start button and choose Close.
Repeat step a until all the programs appearing on the Taskbar are closed.
On the keyboard, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to retrieve the Close Program
window.
Highlight any program in the list (except Explorer and Systray) and choose End Task
.
Repeat steps c and d until all programs (except Explorer and Systray) are closed.
Once the list shows only Explorer and Systray, choose Cancel
to close the Close Program
window.
Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. The installation program runs automatically. If the installation program does not run automatically, click Start
and then click Run
. In the command line box, type the letter of the CD-ROM drive followed by :\SETUP.EXE (for example, type D:\SETUP.EXE).
Click Install Printer Driver
from the CD menu. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the printer software installation.
For Windows 3.1x
Close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the steps below.
On the keyboard, press ALT+TAB to locate an open program. If a program does not appear after you press ALT+TAB, continue with step d.
When you locate an open program, select File
and Exit
within that program.
Repeat steps a and b until all the programs are closed.
On the keyboard, press CTRL+ESC to retrieve the Task List.
Highlight any program in the list (except Program Manager) and choose End Task
.
Repeat steps d and e until all the programs (except Program Manager) are closed.
Once the Task List shows only Program Manager, choose Cancel
to close the Task List.
Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.
In the Program Manager
window, click Run
from the File menu.
At the command line box, type the letter of the CD-ROM drive followed by \WIN31\\SETUP.EXE. Substitute the appropriate three-character language code (found in the table below) for . For example, if the CD-ROM drive letter is D and the language is English, type D:\WIN31\ENU\SETUP.EXE and choose OK.
